| | | MINISTERING GRACE TO THE HEARERS
"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." (Eph 4:29)
In Christ Jesus, speaking becomes a precious stewardship. It is a means through which the Lord Jesus Christ ministers to His people – which is a most marvelous consideration. In this text, we are admonished to take great care how we speak – especially to those who are members of "the household of faith." The life of faith is one that requires personal discipline, frequent feeding, and profitable fellowship. Believers are in a hostile world, hounded by a fierce adversary, and doing battle with "the law of sin" that remains in their "members," or personal constitution (Rom 7:23). Those circumstances call for grace – grace that can actually be ministered to us by Jesus through our speaking. Solemnly we are told to not allow "corrupt communication" to come out of our mouths. That is "unwholesome talk" NIV that God cannot use. It is speaking that the wicked one uses to introduce contamination into the heart and mind. Just as surely as there are good and pure words through which the Lord words, there are also defiled and contaminating words through which the devil works. Such words awaken "the flesh," and stir up "the law of sin" that is in our "members" (Rom 7:23). Speech that is "good to the use of edifying" consists of words that contain the Word of God and correlate with His purpose. These are words that lift the mind above the world, making the Lord and His salvation prominent in our thinking. They put us more in mind of what the Lord has and is doing, and push the world and its activities into the background of thought, even throwing such considerations down to the ground. These are words through which empowering "grace" is delivered to us, coming to us through the faculty of hearing. This, of course, is hearing that is facilitated through "ears" that God gives us for "hearing" Him (Lk 8:8). Words that edify are, in fact, addressed to the part of us that is "born of God." They are words that can be heard with the inner ear – the ear that God gives us for hearing that brings life and rejuvenation within. As it is written, "they that hear shall live" (John 5:25). If words "minister grace to the hearers," it is because they are words that could come out of Jesus' own mouth. He is the ultimate one who speaks "gracious words" (Lk 4:22). Why not ask the Lord to speak through you – to help you speak words that will "impart grace to the hearers?" (NKJV). Not only is He able to speak through you, He even rewards you for speaking such words!
