WHAT CAN YOU KNOW?

"These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may KNOW that we have eternal life . . . And if WE KNOW that He hears us, whatever we ask, WE KNOW that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him . . . WE KNOW that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. WE KNOW that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. And WE KNOW that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that WE MAY KNOW Him who is true . . . " (1 John 5:13-21, NKJV)

THE PREVALENCE OF KNOWING

Using the King James Version as a base, the word "know" is mentioned twenty-seven times in this book.

01. "And hereby WE DO KNOW that WE KNOW Him, if we keep His commandments." (1 John 2:3)
02. "He that saith, I KNOW HIM, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him." (1 John 2:4)

04. "Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby WE KNOW that it is the last time." (1 John 2:18)
05. "But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and YE KNOW all things." (1 John 2:20)
06. "I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because YE KNOW IT, and that no lie is of the truth." (1 John 2:21)
07. "If YE KNOW that He is righteous, YE KNOW that every one that doeth righteousness is born of Him." (1 John 2:29)
08. "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: WE KNOW that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is." (1 John 3:2)
09. "And YE KNOW that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin." (1 John 3:5)
10. "WE KNOW that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death." (1 John 3:14)
11. "Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and YE KNOW that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him." (1 John 3:15)
12. "And hereby WE KNOW that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him." (1 John 3:19)
13. "And he that keepeth His commandments dwelleth in Him, and he in Him. And hereby WE KNOW that He abideth in us, by the Spirit which He hath given us." (1 John 3:24)
14. "Hereby KNOW YE the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God." (1 John 4:2)
15. "We are of God: he that KNOWETH GOD heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby KNOW WE the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error." (1 John 4:6)
16. "Hereby KNOW WE that we dwell in Him, and he in us, because He hath given us of His Spirit." (1 John 4:13)
17. "By this WE KNOW that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep His commandments." (1 John 5:2)
18. "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that YE MAY KNOW that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." (1 John 5:13)
19. "And if WE KNOW that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, WE KNOW that we have the petitions that we desired of Him." (1 John 5:15)
20. "WE KNOW that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not." (1 John 5:18)
21. "And WE KNOW that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness." (1 John 5:19)
22. "And WE KNOW that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we MAY KNOW HIM that is true, and we are in Him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life."  (1 John 5:20)

The word "knoweth," or "knows," is used six times.
01. "But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and KNOWETH NOT whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes."  (1 John 2:11)
02. "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world KNOWETH IS NOT, because it knew Him not."  (1 John 3:1)
03. "For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and KNOWETH ALL THINGS."  (1 John 3:20)
04. "For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and KNOWETH ALL THINGS."  (1 John 3:20)
05. "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and KNOWETH GOD."  (1 John 4:7)
06. "He that loveth not KNOWETH NOT GOD; for God is love."  (1 John 4:8)

The word "known" is used five times.
01. "I write unto you, fathers, because ye have KNOWN HIM that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have KNOWN THE FATHER."  (1 John 2:13)
02. "I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have KNOWN HIM that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one."  (1 John 2:14)
03. "Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, NEITHER KNOWN HIM."  (1 John 3:6)
04. "And we HAVE KNOWN and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him."  (1 John 4:16)

In First John, the NIV uses "know" thirty-three times, "known" five times, and "knows" three times.

Other things believers are said to know include the following.
01. That the Law speaks to those who are under the Law, in order that every mouth might be stopped, and all the world become guilty before God (Rom 3:19).
02. That the Law is spiritual (Rom 7:14).
03. That the whole creation groans under the burden of mortality (Rom 8:22).
04. That all things work together for good to those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose (Rom 8:28).
05. That an idol is nothing in the world (1 Cor 8:4).
06. That is the earthly house of our present bodies is dissolved, we have a building of God, eternal in the heavens (2 Cor 5:1).
07. That the Law is good, if a man uses it lawfully (1 Tim 1:8).
08. That our labor is not vain in the Lord (1 Cor 15:58).
09. That no immoral person has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God (Eph 5:5).
10. That we were not redeemed with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ (1 Pet 1:18).

It should be abundantly clear to us that ignorance has no part in the salvation of God. Life in Christ is one of much knowledge, and lack of knowledge is soundly rebuked. There are at least two reasons why these conditions are so. First, God has revealed more in Christ Jesus than He ever has before. Second, we have received the Holy Spirit of God, who knows the things of God, and can assist us in seeing them with greater clarity.

This is not second-hand knowledge, derived by mere mental disciplines and research. Such  knowledge is, indeed, lawful, but it cannot produce confidence, assurance, or boldness in the  presence of the Lord. One may very well know all there is to know about narcotics: how they are  made, and what dreadful results they yield in those taking them. Yet, that knowledge cannot  impart moral power to the individual. It cannot strengthen the will, and fortify the resolve. In  this sense of knowledge, there are precious few people who have fallen into sin who did not have  a good degree of theoretical or speculative knowledge concerning their vice. It could not keep  them from sin.

The knowledge addressed in these devotions is effective knowledge spiritual knowledge that enables one to perceive good and obtain it, and detect evil and avoid it.

PRAYER POINT: Father, in the name of Jesus, deliver me from all forms of spiritual ignorance.
